Death on the Nile is a classic, old-fashioned mystery set in the 1930’s. The movie is based on the Agatha Christie novel of the same name published in 1937. This is the third adaptation of the book.

A group of people are on a cruise on the Nile river. Someone is murdered. Everyone is a suspect.

Alan: The movie is stunning visually. Beautiful period outfits. Amazing locations. I think it is color graded with sepia tones giving it a very nostalgic feel.

Michelle: Death on the Nile has a stellar cast and setting, however, something was missing. Parts were interesting, but overall, it was boring and slow.

Alan: It starts off a little slow: a war scene, a jazz club, and a man flying a kite from the Great Pyramids. Who are these people? What are their relationships? I had a lot of trouble understanding what was going on. I was sure that clues were being dropped but I had no idea what to look for. I felt like the story didn’t really pick up until everyone got onto the boat.

Michelle: The set up of all the characters and their relationships was intriguing enough to keep the boredom away. After the murder on the boat, Poirot investigates and solves the central mystery revealing a few other secrets. This story seems to have worked as it was previously a successful novel and two films, but this version doesn’t hit me as entertaining. Two stars.

Alan: It was a solid mystery — which it should be since it’s based on a classic. It kept me engaged and guessing. It was visually gorgeous. I give it five stars.
